OnthecornerofChinthurstLaneandTheStreetisGerald’sWood,awood managedforWonershParishCouncilbyvolunteersoftheWonershWoodland Group(withagreatdealofhelpfromtheScouts).Thewoodhasawidevarietyof trees,predominantlySweetChestnutbutalsoOak,NorwayMaple,Ash,Douglas Fir,Hazel,Elm,Elder,HollyandSpindle.Therearesignsitmayhavebeenancient woodlandandthereisalsoevidenceofcoppicingoftheSweetChestnutinthe past, a traditional form of woodland management.WHO WAS GERALD?ManypeoplehaveanopinionastowhoGeraldwas,andaccordingtothe informationboardattheedgeofthewood“Gerald’sWoodwasgiventotheParish bylocalmanGeraldSparkin1959‘forpublicwalksandpleasuregardensor recreation grounds’”.Infact,GeraldwasGeraldFarrer,asolicitorbelievedtohaveworkedforFarrer&CosolicitorsinLincoln’sInnFields,oneofthreesonsof JamesandFlorenceFarrer.HewasbornintheLewishamareain1925andafterWW2movedwithhisparentstoShamleyGreen(theyare shownlivinginHulbrookFarmin1947).In1948hemarriedPriscillaHulseandby1954hadmovedtoLinershCottageinBramley.They then had a daughter in 1955.Geralddiedon1August1957,attheyoungageof32ofwhatisbelievedtohavebeenasofttissuetumouraroundthehipandalthoughhe had surgery he then developed metastases. His probate was proved in London to his widow and his effects were valued at £19,117 4s 8d.PriscillawentontomarryPeterDownin1958andtheyhadtwochildren,PeterandPhilippa.By1961theyhadmovedfromLinersh Cottageto Wonersh Hollow, staying for a year before moving away from the village. Priscilla died in 1998.Gerald’sfather,James,andPercyFuller,ashistrustees,transferredthelandonthenortheastsideofChinthurstLanetoWonershParish Council for consideration of the sum of one pound on 21 May 1959.So,thewoodsthenareagiftfromtheFarrerfamilyinmemoryofGeraldFarrer,alocalman,andnotGeraldSparkassomanypeople believe.
